Sex & Relationships

Living with HIV may affect the way that you and your partner(s) feel about sex and will have implications about the sex that you have in your relationships – whether this is in a long term or developing relationship or in more casual sexual relationships.

Some of the many sex and relationship issues are discussed in this section of the website, including contraception, pregnancy and disclosing your HIV status to new partners.

Disclosure to New Partners

Deciding when (and if) to tell new partners that you have HIV can be a daunting prospect, but advice is available on the issue of disclosure.

Mixed Status Relationships

A mixed status relationship is one where one partner is HIV positive and the other is not. This may present a number of challenges and concerns.

STIs

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can increase the viral load in some of the body fluids of someone who has both HIV and an STI.

HIV, Pregnancy & Birth

Whether you are thinking about getting pregnant or are already pregnant, there are a number of issues to consider for those living with HIV or for those whose partner has HIV.

Contraception Choices

HIV treatments can interfere with some hormonal contraception methods, so it is wise to seek advice from your HIV consultant.

Condoms & Femidoms

Condoms and Femidoms (the female condom) are the only contraceptive methods that also reduce the risk of HIV transmission during sex.

Sexual Difficulties

There is evidence to suggest that an HIV positive diagnosis can contribute to sexual dysfunction, both physically and psychologically.
